The Windows of Caerbannog

P

erhaps due to overstretched compatibility, Windows 10 bear many problems as if oneself is a Trojan horse.

Indeed, in the Windows, we see the house divided. Its core organs – File Explorer – and most intimate kins – Microsoft Office – apparently causes an immune response.

Upon appealing to Google, immediately came up two patterned victims suffering the consanguineous disease:

An as of usual, solutions brought no resolution on the site.

At best, the suggestion was to re-install the MS Office and Windows; thus solution brought the dissolution of the Windows family.

Interestingly, this problem of domestic discord surfaced at the latest updates of the respective softwares, hinting at intrinsic flaws, not user mistakes.

And as of usual, the below will summarize my take on the conundrum, one being the official solution, and the other my own discovery.

Bob the Fixer

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. On the right is Apps and Functions.
  3. Scroll down and click Microsoft Office Desktop Apps or the equivalent, depending on your edition.
  4. Go to Advanced Options and press that Repair button.

Abjure the Providence

The alternative (working) one is to turn off Details Pane in File Explorer.

While Windows lacks many alternatives to Mac's features, Details Pane somewhat successfully impersonates Preview Pane in Mac's Finder.

Counter-intuitively, Windows' Preview Pane serves no purpose of its name. It only works on singular document files, fails to capture the most essential (file size and date), and captures the least cared (screenshot of a Word file).

Mac's Finder is Providence, prescient of every file and folder. Window's Details Pane halves such Providence, a Promethean agony.
Now, the mighty Windows won't let you tiniest ember, should you use Microsoft Office.

In short, turn off the Details Panel. Abjure the digital Providence.

Conclusion

Perhaps the said problem rose due to Microsoft not presupposing the Preview image of their own office formats.

Unheard in the Macintosh realm, such problems reiterate, evoking the image of a house divided.

One says one repudiates the dreary snow globe in which Macintosh Providence lies. But one seemingly enjoys living in a discordance, a house of cracked windows.
